Robert Clark Gregg Jr. (born April 2, 1962) is an American actor, director, and screenwriter. He is best known for portraying Phil Coulson in films and television series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe from 2008 to 2021. Gregg also voiced Coulson in the animated television series Ultimate Spider-Man (2012–2017) and the video games Lego Marvel Super Heroes (2013), Marvel Heroes (2013), and Lego Marvel's Avengers (2016). Gregg is also known for his role as FBI Special Agent Mike Casper on the NBC political drama series The West Wing (2001–2004) and as Richard, the ex-husband of Christine Campbell, in the CBS sitcom The New Adventures of Old Christine (2006–2010). He wrote the horror film What Lies Beneath (2000) and wrote and directed the black comedy Choke (2008) and the comedy-drama Trust Me (2013). Steve Rogers, a scrawny but determined young man, is desperate to serve in World War II despite repeated rejections due to his frail health. His perseverance catches the eye of Dr. Abraham Erskine, who recruits him for a secret military experiment. Steve is transformed into the super-soldier Captain America through the Super-Soldier Serum, but Dr. Erskine is killed by a Hydra agent, leaving Steve as the only successful subject. Initially relegated to performing as a propaganda mascot, Steve takes matters into his own hands, rescuing a captured Allied unit, including his best friend, Bucky Barnes, from Hydra’s clutches. His heroism earns him a frontline role in the fight against Hydra, led by the ruthless Johann Schmidt, aka the Red Skull, who wields the power of the Tesseract, a mystical energy source. Steve leads daring missions to dismantle Hydra’s operations. In a climactic battle aboard Hydra's aircraft, the Red Skull is consumed by the Tesseract’s power, and Steve sacrifices himself to crash the plane into the Arctic, saving millions. Presumed dead, he awakens decades later in the modern world, setting the stage for his next adventure as Captain America.
