By 1916, Charlie Chaplin was already an actor earning over $600,000 a year, an amount never seen before for an artist, when he signed the nineteen-year-old Edna Purviance, making her his leading lady in 35 films between 1916 and 1923. From the moment he signed his new contract, Chaplin also had his own studio with a staff, a screening room, offices and accommodation for the actors.
