Goodbye, Mr. Shaft is the fifth novel in the Shaft series written by Ernest Tidyman, first published in 1973. This installment is notable for shifting the setting from John Shaft's usual New York City haunts to London. In the story, Shaft is hired to protect the two sons of an American senator from a kidnapping plot, leading him to infiltrate a British public school by posing as a physical training instructor. The title is a play on the 1934 James Hilton novel, Goodbye, Mr. Chips.
