Beginning with Isaac Freeman, a freed slave turned Union soldier in the Civil War, the story spans to his grandson, Langston Freeman, a jazz musician during the Harlem Renaissance, and then to Malcolm Freeman, a civil rights lawyer in the 1960s. Each man fights for justice in his era, confronting the challenges of racism, segregation, and systemic oppression.
