The sword is said to be a mystical sword, but how he obtained it is unknown. The sword is said to be indestructible and is able to cut through anything on earth. He is revealed to be a hybrid of a human and an elder bairn. Which answers the questions of why he is so skilled and able to go toe to toe with those creatures with ease.
