The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim unfolds 200 years after the events of Oblivion, in the province of Skyrim. The High King has been murdered, and a civil war erupts between the Imperial Legion and the Stormcloak rebels, led by Ulfric Stormcloak. Amidst this turmoil, ancient dragons, long thought to be extinct, return to Skyrim, led by the powerful dragon Alduin, the World-Eater, who is prophesied to destroy the world. The player character begins as a prisoner about to be executed when Alduin attacks. This event reveals the player to be the Dragonborn – a mortal with the blood and soul of a dragon, capable of learning and using the dragons' language, the Thu'um (also known as the Voice or dragon shouts), and absorbing the souls of slain dragons. The main questline follows the Dragonborn's journey to understand their destiny and defeat Alduin. Along the way, they learn new dragon shouts, delve into ancient lore, and confront various threats, including other dragons and their followers. The Dragonborn also encounters the last living Dragon Priest, Miraak, in the Dragonborn DLC, who seeks to dominate Skyrim. Beyond the main quest, Skyrim offers a vast open world filled with side quests, guilds to join (such as the Companions, the College of Winterhold, the Thieves Guild, and the Dark Brotherhood), and factions to support in the civil war. The player can explore sprawling landscapes, dungeons, and cities, developing their skills and uncovering the rich history and lore of Skyrim.
