Ben Tennyson is an unpopular fifteen-year-old teenager despite his efforts to fit in with his peers. He is often taunted by JT and Cash, the two high school bullies and his only friend is his cousin Gwen. One evening, he goes to a student party to which he has not been invited and despite his efforts to try to fit in, he ruins the party following a series of blunders. Ashamed, Ben flees to isolate himself in the forest and stumbles upon a mysterious capsule containing a bracelet of extra-terrestrial origin. The bracelet then automatically attaches to his wrist and upon attempting to remove it, he transforms into a burning creature that unwittingly starts a fire in the woods. Ben then flees and returns to town to hide in order to find a solution. He then comes across a street gang who was attacking a young girl from his high school, Julie Yamamoto, and uses his new powers to protect her from the thugs. Their leader, Kevin Levin, though surprised was unimpressed and as they came to blows, Kevin absorbed some of Ben's energy, briefly turning his arm into magma. Ben finally manages to neutralize his adversary who collapses unconscious before resuming his normal appearance. Confused and disoriented, Ben goes to his cousin to tell her about what happened. Unconvinced at first, Gwen agrees to help Ben learn how to use the bracelet. The two young people thus go every day after class to a vacant lot so that Ben can train to master his new powers under Gwen's directive.
