The counterman at a greasy spoon diner where Gordon eats alone, chain-smoking. He asks "You OK, Jim?" and listens to Gordon's existential crisis about how figuring out something important only makes everything harder. Then he offers a rambling story about his brother-in-law wanting to open a bar. Warm, working-class, and slightly useless—a reminder that most people can't help Gordon's pain.
