The Dark Knight Returns tells a story that begins 10 years after the retirement of the masked vigilante Batman. The heroes in the world are extinct by law and Superman, the last in activity, is an American secret agent, a super-weapon used in cases of international war or crisis. The rise in crime in Gotham City, with the gang called "mutants" coupled with Bruce Wayne's unusual sense of justice, makes the batman come out of the darkness of retirement and face the city's criminals. Batman is represented by Miller as a man traumatized and tormented by his past, who uses intelligence and strength to do justice in a much more brutal and violent way in relation to his previous activities, but with the limit of the principle of never killing criminals. The revival of the vigilante puts the world in an uproar. Batman arouses opposite opinions; at the same time that he is called outlaw and accused of violating human rights, he gains the support of countless admirers, who appreciate his struggle for the resumption of order, peace and justice. A new and controversial Robin emerges, a teenager who adds more fuel to the media fire. The Joker, catatonic at Arkham Asylum, awakens when he watches around the Dark Knight, feeling motivated to return to active duty. He goes on a wave of crimes and insanity without limits: he schedules a television interview, but he murders the entire audience with his gas of laughter; he becomes a fugitive, seeks, manipulates and beats Selina Kyle.
