Carmine Falcone, also known by his moniker 'The Roman' is the head of organized crime in Gotham City when Bruce Wayne returns home after his travels and begins his transformation into Batman. He inherited his empire from his father, Vincent Falcone. Carmine is easily the most powerful criminal in the city during Batman's first year and at war with fellow crime boss Salvatore Maroni, who wants to seize power from him and rule without opposition. Falcone's corruption extends into Gotham's police department and his place of power means he is one of the first criminals Batman intends to bring down. Carmine has three legitimate children who all want to succeed him as ruler of Gotham's criminals.
