Bruce Wayne, three years into his crusade as Gotham's dark protector, stalks a city steeped in corruption and fear. When Dr. Jonathan Crane, a disgraced Arkham psychologist, unleashes a hallucinogenic toxin on Gotham's elite, nightmares spill into the streets. Crane's financiers in the underworld include Tony Zucco, a brutal enforcer who sabotages Haly's Circus to extort protection money. The tragedy claims the lives of the Graysons mid-performance, leaving their son Dick orphaned. Unlike others, Dick resists the terror of Crane's gas, showing defiance where fear should rule. Drawn to the boy's courage, Batman takes him in while unraveling the connection between Crane's experiments and Gotham's criminal networks. As paranoia spreads, Bruce confronts his own fractured psyche, visions of his parents' murder clawing at his resolve. The trail leads him into the depths of Arkham, where Crane plans to unleash fear on the entire city. In a nightmarish showdown through toxin-soaked corridors, Batman battles his demons while Dick thwarts Zucco's escape, and together they end the plot. For the first time, Bruce chooses family, not solitude, formally adopting Dick and beginning a new chapter of his crusade.
