Set during Batman’s 5th year of crime fighting, a new vigilante has appeared in Gotham City, calling himself the Cavalier, a swashbuckling hero. He starts to exceed Batman in popularity, due to his charismatic and theatrical personality, and even begins to win over Batgirl after helping her stop Black Mask’s smuggling operation at the Gotham Dockyard. The Cavalier is revealed to be Mortimer Drake, a wealthy British socialite incharge of Gotham City’s 1st National Bank. He was inspired by Batman and became a crimefighter in order to battle evil and satiate his thrill-seeking urges. During his time as one of Gotham’s protectors, a thief is robbing rich apartments, and Cavalier is seemingly unable to catch this knave. It’s later revealed that Mortimer is the jewel thief, and has been committing these robberies in order to flatter a woman he’s fallen in love with. His drive to impress his girlfriend and protect Gotham begins to weigh on his mental state, and he snaps after he accidentally kills The Eraser, a criminal cleaner who gets rid of evidence at crime scenes. Realizing he’s now on Batman’s radar, he challenges Batman to a duel for who’ll be Gotham’s protector.
