Zachary Edward Snyder (born March 1, 1966) is an American filmmaker. He made his feature film debut in 2004 with Dawn of the Dead, a remake of the 1978 horror film of the same name. Since then, he has directed or produced a number of comic book and superhero films, including 300 (2006) and Watchmen (2009), as well as the Superman film that started the DC Extended Universe, Man of Steel (2013), and its follow-ups, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017), the latter of which had a director's cut released in 2021. He also directed the animated film Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole (2010), the psychological action film Sucker Punch (2011), the zombie heist film Army of the Dead (2021), and the two-part space opera films Rebel Moon (2023) and Rebel Moon—Part Two: The Scargiver (2024). In 2004, he founded the production company The Stone Quarry (formerly known as Cruel and Unusual Films) alongside his wife Deborah Snyder and producing partner Wesley Coller. Batman is a 2024 American superhero film based on the eponymous DC Comics superhero. Produced by Legendary Pictures, The Stone Quarry, and DC Films, it is the first installment in the DC Legacy Universe. The film was directed by Joseph Kosinski and written by Zack Snyder and Tim Burton, and stars Liam Hemsworth as Bruce Wayne alongside Sienna Miller, Giancarlo Esposito, Bryan Cranston, Hugo Weaving, Liev Schreiber, Willem Dafoe, Jim Caviezel, John Travolta, and Ian McKellen as Alfred Pennyworth. The film follows a young Bruce Wayne who is forced to make allies when dealing with a crime kingpin known as the Joker. Batman was released on February 8th, 2024; the film received critical and universal praise for its direction, story, visual style, action sequences, themes, performances–particularly Hemsworth, Miller, Cranston, Weaving, and McKellen–stylistic cinematography, and emotional depth. It was also a financial success, grossing $891 million worldwide. A sequel entitled Batman Unchained is in development, named after the cancelled Batman & Robin sequel.
