Princess Genevieve and her 11 sisters discover a secret entrance to a magical world where they can dance, even though they are forbidden by their strict cousin Duchess Rowena. (In depth summary) In Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses, Princess Genevieve and her eleven sisters live in a kingdom where their high-spirited nature is deemed unladylike. To transform them into "proper" royalty, their father, King Randolph, invites his cousin, the Duchess Rowena, to the castle. However, Rowena is a cruel antagonist who bans dancing, music, and color, intending to break the sisters' spirits while secretly poisoning the King to seize the throne for herself. Amidst this tyranny, the sisters discover a secret entrance in their bedroom floor to a magical world where they can dance freely and their wishes come true. When Genevieve learns of Rowena’s treacherous plot and her father’s failing health, the sisters must unite to save their family and kingdom. With the help of the royal cobbler, Derek, they navigate the magical realm and return to the castle to confront the Duchess. In a final confrontation, Rowena’s own dark magic backfires, forcing her to dance uncontrollably forever. The youngest princess, Lacey, uses healing water from the magical land to save the King, who eventually realizes that his daughters are most wonderful when they are allowed to be themselves.
