His grandfather worked with Prof. Gerald Robotnik, Ivo's grandfather, on a secret project that is yet to be revealed. That's how Sonic got his powers. Of all the families of Mobians for Robotnik to be the harshest, it was his family. Maurice worked as a stonemason, forced to make monuments for Robotnik. Maurice was actually a kind soul who'd give half his pay to help with family, and the other half to people who need it. That didn't make Robotnik happy. Maurice will be consequently executed for not paying his taxes just to help the helpless.
