Maria Valcheva Bakalova (/bəˈkɑːləvə/ bə-KAH-lə-və; born 4 June 1996) is a Bulgarian actress. She has received various accolades, including a Critics' Choice Movie Award and nominations for an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe Award. Born and raised in Burgas, Bakalova began her career in Bulgarian cinema while attending the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts. She mostly portrayed dramatic roles in films such as Transgression (2017), The Father (2019), Last Call (2020), and Women Do Cry (2021). She rose to prominence after starring in the 2020 mockumentary film Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, which earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Bakalova has since starred in films of various genres, including Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022) and The Apprentice (2024). She has also had voice roles, including in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023) as Cosmo the Spacedog and in the DC Universe series Creature Commandos (2024). It was originally in production, but it got shelved. Annushka Borzakovskaya (Anya for short) is from Russia and lives in a small New England town with her single mother and her little brother. Because of what she and her family went through, she is crass and cynical. She put herself on an extreme "thin girl" diet and learned to speak without her accent. Anya is a social outcast at her private school. Sometimes, she likes to find a place where no one's looking and smoke a cigarette. One day, while going for a walk by herself in the woods, she accidentally falls down a deep well with no water in it, and sprains her ankle. What's even worse is that at the bottom of the well, there is... a SKELETON! Anya tries calling for help, but no one can hear her. While waiting in actual pain, she finds a bright light coming from... a GHOST! A girl named Emily, who is about Anya's age. She's the ghost of that skeleton. Apparently, Emily died of thirst after falling down the well 90 years ago. Eventually, help does come, and Anya is relieved. But soon after coming home, Anya sees that the ghost, Emily, has FOLLOWED HER! Her ghost can't go anywhere without her bones being moved. Somehow, a finger bone slipped into Anya's backpack, so now Emily gets to go wherever Anya goes. Eventually, Anya discovers that having a ghost friend is quite beneficial. While becoming best friends with her, Anya must also solve the mystery of Emily's death.
