Dr. Henry "Hank" Pym is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by penciler Jack Kirby, editor-plotter Stan Lee and scripter Larry Lieber, the character first appeared in Tales to Astonish #27 (January 1962). The character, a scientist that debuted in a standalone science-fiction anthology story, returned several issues later as the original iteration of the superhero Ant-Man with the power to shrink to the size of an insect. Alongside his crime-fighting partner-wife Janet van Dyne, he goes on to assume other superhero identities, including the size-changing Giant-Man and Goliath; the insect-themed Yellowjacket; and briefly the Wasp. He is a founding member of the superhero team the Avengers and the creator of the robotic villain Ultron. Debuting in the Silver Age of Comic Books, Hank Pym has since been featured in several Marvel-endorsed products such as animated films, video games, and television series. Michael Douglas plays the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films Ant-Man (2015), Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), and is set to reprise the role in the Disney+ series What If...? (2021) and the film Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2022).

After working together with the Avengers, Hank and Janet grow closer. Hank tries to muster the courage to ask Janet out, already having Vernon's approval. Janet is increasingly excited about her life as a superhero. However, all of this falls apart when Vernon dies unexpectedly from heart failure. Grieving, Jan withdraws, and Hank doesn't know how to help, feeling he has failed once again. But things get even more complicated when an explosion occurs in Pym's lab during an attack led by Whirlwind (the mutant villain the duo defeated at the beginning of the film), leaving Jan injured. Hank blames himself, questioning whether it was a mistake to become Ant-Man again. However, he discovers that the mastermind behind the attack was his old friend, Darren Cross, who years ago worked unsuccessfully with SHIELD in an attempt to replicate Pym particles. Using a sample of the particles, Cross produced his own, albeit unstable, particles. Hank needs to deal with the feelings of failure and doubt he feels in order to stop the man he once called a friend and help Jan. Meanwhile, Jan needs to deal with grief and anger when, even wounded, she joins Hank to stop Cross. However, the two are not alone; they have each other, which strengthens their bond as a heroic duo and perhaps something more.
