An elderly Catholic cardinal of the Vatican. Initially aiding Anderson in his quest to hunt down Lazar, Valdez eventually reveals himself as Lazar's ally. Disillusioned by his old age and the absence of miraculous experiences or divine visions, Valdez has grown skeptical of the Church and the existence of God. Fearing death and driven by existential dread, he betrays the Church and joins forces with Lazar and his vampire thralls, in exchange for becoming a vampire himself.
