Flint Marko, also known as Sandman, grew up in Queens with a childhood marked by paternal abandonment and maternal alcoholism. After a life of crime, he escaped from prison and hid on a beach near a nuclear facility, where an accident fused him with the sand, granting him the power to manipulate it. As Sandman, he launched a series of robot attacks in New York, becoming a recurring enemy of Spider-Man. After being recaptured, he was freed by "The Gentlemen," and together they reorganized the Sinister Six after Rhino's death.
