In the novel, he is a retired judge who orchestrated the murders out of a strong sense of justice. In the show, he would be a cop-turned-professor who left the police force many years ago after witnessing the tragic death of his partner. (It is later revealed that he *caused* this death after realizing his partner was corrupt.) He is still driven by a misguided sense of justice, but it is pointed at those who have committed lesser crimes (ex: cheating on a test) rather than fellow murderers as in the book.
