First Appearance: Name of the Doctor. Al Pacino's War Doctor was introduced as a previously secret incarnation that he hid from himself out of shame, as the War Doctor was the incarnation that ended the Time War by destroying Gallifrey. Due to this action, he would not refer to himself as the Doctor in this time. This was later resolved in 'Day of the Doctor' where it was revealed that he and two of his future incarnations actually saved Gallifrey. The role was written because Jeffrey Dean Morgan refused to return as the Ninth Doctor due to animosity with the creators.
