After being bitten by a radioactive spider, Peter Parker gains spider-like abilities and attributes. Originally using these abilities to become famous, his selfishness results in the inadvertent murder of his Uncle Ben, which leads him to learn the lesson "with great power must also come great responsibility". He uses these abilities to protect others as the superhero Spider-Man.
