As Broadway icon Margo Channing prepares for another acclaimed season, she meets Eve Harrington, a seemingly devoted young fan with a heartbreaking past and an unwavering admiration for her work. Moved by Eve's story, Margo welcomes her into her inner circle as her assistant. But Eve's gratitude masks a relentless ambition. Quietly manipulating friendships, professional relationships, and opportunities, Eve begins positioning herself as Margo's indispensable confidante—and eventual replacement. As Margo struggles with the industry's obsession with youth and the growing distance in her relationship with director Bill Simpson, Eve carefully engineers situations that undermine her mentor while elevating her own reputation. A single missed performance gives Eve the chance to take the stage, earning rave reviews from influential critic Addison DeWitt and transforming her overnight into Broadway's brightest new star. Believing she has outmaneuvered everyone, Eve sets her sights on playwright Lloyd Richards, hoping to secure both his affection and a lifetime of starring roles written specifically for her. But Addison reveals he has uncovered the truth: "Eve Harrington" is a fabricated identity, built on years of deception, reinvention, and calculated betrayal. Rather than expose her, Addison blackmails Eve, ensuring that although she achieves the fame she craves, she will never truly control her own destiny. Months later, Eve stands at the pinnacle of Broadway, accepting the prestigious Sarah Siddons Award as the industry's newest leading lady. Returning home after the ceremony, she encounters an adoring teenage fan named Phoebe, whose eagerness and carefully crafted innocence feel hauntingly familiar. As Phoebe dons Eve's glamorous coat and imagines herself accepting the same award, the cycle of ambition, manipulation, and ruthless pursuit of stardom begins anew.
