Subject 28, the original Esper who destroyed Manhattan with a thought and has slept in cryo-stasis for twenty-one years. Akira is a god—silent, impassive, eternal. He appears in the prologue as a digitally youthened child and in the climax as an adolescent deity stepping barefoot from his frozen tomb. His face is a void; his eyes contain galaxies. When Travis looks into them and sees the cosmos, the film pulls us into Akira's pupil and across the universe. He is the promise of Part Two.
