In 1988, Tokyo is destroyed by an atomic bomb following failed ESP experiments. By 2019, in the rebuilt Neo-Tokyo, biker gang leader Shōtarō Kaneda races to save his friend Tetsuo Shima, who gains uncontrollable telekinetic powers after a motorcycle accident. As Tetsuo threatens the city, Kaneda battles corrupt politicians, reckless scientists and the military to stop him. The conflict culminates in a catastrophic showdown at the Tokyo Olympiad, exposing the government’s dark secrets. Based on Katsuhiro Otomo’s 1982 manga, this cyberpunk classic is a genre-defining moment in the medium of anime.
