Taras Bulba is the fictional protagonist of Nikolai Gogol's 1835/1842 historical novella of the same name. He is a fierce, aging 17th-century Zaporozhian Cossack leader who defends his orthodox faith and culture against Polish rule. The character has been adapted into various films, most notably portrayed by Yul Brynner in the 1962 film.
