Lyonel had black hair and blue eyes like his ancestors from House Baratheon. He was tall and powerfully built, a "swaggering giant of a man". Lyonel is described as being a head taller than Ser Raymun Fossoway and almost as tall as Ser Duncan the Tall, who was measured at 6'11".
