Alongside Len Taunyane, he was one of the first 2 Black African athletes to compete in the Olympics. Unlike Len, he is believed to have worn shoes during the race. He was also part of the Boer War exhibition with Len, and they entered the race together at the last minute. He too was chased a mile off course by aggressive dogs and ultimately finished 13th (later upgraded to 12th).
