Sonic stowed away on a warship that was headed for West Side Island when he found in a cage an orphaned fox boy, barefoot, scrawny and dirty. His name was Miles, but he never liked that name. He saw Sonic fight against Robotnik and his Badniks and saw how brave and heroic he was, and wanted to be just like him. But everyone at his home bullied him about his birth defect: his two tails. Sonic, being the caring hedgehog he was, freed him from his captivity. Sonic knew what it was like to be an orphan, and promised Tails he'll never leave his side.
