Wendell Edward Pierceย (born December 8, 1963) is an American actor and businessman. Having trained atย Juilliard School, Pierce rose to prominence as aย character actorย portraying roles on both stage and screen. He first gained recognition portraying the role of Detectiveย Bunk Morelandย in the acclaimedย HBOย drama seriesย The Wireย from 2002 to 2008.
His other notable television roles include theย trombonistย Antoine Batiste inย Tremeย (2010โ2013),ย James Greerย inย Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan (2018โ2023), the attorney Robert Zane inย Suits (2013โ2019), andย Clarence Thomasย inย Confirmationย (2016). He earnedย Independent Spirit Awardsย nominations for his film roles inย Fourย (2012) andย Burning Caneย (2019), on which he also served as a producer. Other notable film roles includeย Malcolm Xย (1992),ย Waiting to Exhaleย (1995),ย Rayย (2004),ย Selmaย (2014),ย The Giftย (2015), andย Clemencyย (2019).
Pierce made hisย Broadwayย debut inย John Pielmeier's 1985 playย The Boys of Winter, followed byย Caryl Churchill'sย Serious Moneyย in 1988. As a theatrical producer, he earned aย Tony Award for Best Playย nomination forย August Wilson'sย Radio Golfย (2007), then won forย Bruce Norris'sย Clybourne Parkย (2012).
