Taika David Cohenย ONZMย (born 16 August 1975), known professionally asย Taika Waititi(/หtaษชkษย หwaษชtษชti/ย TY-kษย WY-tee-tee),ย is a New Zealand filmmaker, actor and comedian. He is known for directing quirky comedy films and has expanded his career as a voice actor and producer on numerous projects. He has received multiple accolades, including anย Academy Award, aย BAFTA Awardย and aย Grammy Award.ย Timeย magazine named him one of theย 100 most influential people in the worldย in 2022.
His feature filmsย Boyย (2010) andย Hunt for the Wilderpeopleย (2016) have each been the top-grossing New Zealand film. Waititi's 2003 short filmย Two Cars, One Nightย earned him an Academy Award nomination forย Best Live Action Short Film. He co-wrote, co-directed and starred in theย horror comedyย filmย What We Do in the Shadowsย (2014) withย Jemaine Clement, which was adapted into aย television series of the same nameย in 2019. The series has been nominated for theย Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series.
His directing credits include the superhero filmsย Thor: Ragnarokย (2017) andย Thor: Love and Thunderย (2022), as well as theย black comedyย filmย Jojo Rabbitย (2019), the last of which he also wrote and starred in as an imaginary version ofย Adolf Hitler.ย Jojo Rabbitย received six Academy Award nominations and wonย Best Adapted Screenplay. Waititi also earned a Grammy Award for producing theย film's soundtrack.
In television, Waititi co-created and produced theย comedy-dramaย seriesย Reservation Dogs and directed, produced, and starred in the comedyย Our Flag Means Death. In addition to directingย an episodeย of The Mandalorian series, he voiced the characterย IG-11, for which he was nominated for theย Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance.
