Alexander Medawar GarlandΒ (born 26 May 1970) is an English author, screenwriter, and director. He rose to prominence with his novelΒ The BeachΒ (1996). He received praise for writing theΒ Danny BoyleΒ filmsΒ 28 Days LaterΒ (2002) andΒ SunshineΒ (2007), as well asΒ Never Let Me Go (2010) andΒ DreddΒ (2012). In video games, he co-wroteΒ Enslaved: Odyssey to the WestΒ (2010) and was a story supervisor onΒ DmC: Devil May Cry (2013).
Garland made his directorial debut when he wrote and directed the sci-fi thrillerΒ Ex MachinaΒ (2014). He earned anΒ Academy AwardΒ nomination forΒ Best Original Screenplay. He won threeΒ British Independent Film Awards, includingΒ Best Screenplay,Β Best Director, andΒ Best British Independent FilmΒ for the film. His second movie,Β AnnihilationΒ (2018), an adaptation of theΒ 2014 novel of the same name, was a critical success. He wrote, directed, and executive produced theΒ FX miniseriesΒ DevsΒ (2020), followed by the horror thrillerΒ MenΒ (2022) and the dystopian action thrillerΒ Civil WarΒ (2024). He also co-directed the war filmΒ WarfareΒ (2025). A24 produced the three films.
