YorgosΒ LanthimosΒ (Greek:Β ΞΞΉΟΟΞ³ΞΏΟ ΞάνθιμοΟ, born 23 September 1973) is a Greek filmmaker. He has receivedΒ multiple accolades, including aΒ BAFTA Award and aΒ Golden Lion, as well as nominations for fiveΒ Academy AwardsΒ and aΒ Golden Globe Award.
Lanthimos started his career inΒ experimental theatreΒ before making his directorial film debut with the sex comedyΒ My Best FriendΒ (2001). He rose to prominence by directing the psychological drama filmΒ DogtoothΒ (2009), which won theΒ Un Certain Regard prize at theΒ Cannes Film FestivalΒ and was nominated for theΒ Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Lanthimos transitioned to making English-language films with the black comedyΒ The LobsterΒ (2015), which earned him anΒ Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay, and the psychological thrillerΒ The Killing of a Sacred DeerΒ (2017).
He collaborated with actressΒ Emma StoneΒ in the period black comediesΒ The FavouriteΒ (2018) andΒ Poor ThingsΒ (2023) and the anthology filmΒ Kinds of KindnessΒ (2024). He received nominations for theΒ Academy Award for Best DirectorΒ andΒ Best PictureΒ forΒ The FavouriteΒ andΒ Poor Things, in addition to winning the Golden Lion for the latter.
