Alexander Medawar Garlandย (born 26 May 1970) is an English author, screenwriter, and director. He rose to prominence with his novelย The Beachย (1996). He received praise for writing theย Danny Boyleย filmsย 28 Days Laterย (2002) andย Sunshineย (2007), as well asย Never Let Me Go (2010) andย Dreddย (2012). In video games, he co-wroteย Enslaved: Odyssey to the Westย (2010) and was a story supervisor onย DmC: Devil May Cry (2013).
Garland made his directorial debut when he wrote and directed the sci-fi thrillerย Ex Machinaย (2014). He earned anย Academy Awardย nomination forย Best Original Screenplay. He won threeย British Independent Film Awards, includingย Best Screenplay,ย Best Director, andย Best British Independent Filmย for the film. His second movie,ย Annihilationย (2018), an adaptation of theย 2014 novel of the same name, was a critical success. He wrote, directed, and executive produced theย FX miniseriesย Devsย (2020), followed by the horror thrillerย Menย (2022) and the dystopian action thrillerย Civil Warย (2024). He also co-directed the war filmย Warfareย (2025). A24 produced the three films.
